چکیده

Turbulent mixing at the sub-meter scale is an essential component of ocean's meridional overturning circulation and its associated global redistribution heat, carbon, nutrients, pollutants, other tracers. Whereas direct turbulence observations in ocean interior are limited to a modest collection field programs, basic information such as temperature, salinity, depth available globally. Here, we show that supervised machine learning algorithms can be trained on existing data develop skillful predictions key properties from T, S, Z, topographic data. This constitutes promising first step toward hybrid physics-artificial intelligence approach parameterization turbulent climate models.

Universality of small scale turbulence.

The proposed universality of small scale turbulence is investigated for a set of measurements in a cryogenic free jet with a variation of the Reynolds number (Re) from 8500 to 10(6) (max(R(lambda) approximately 1200). The traditional analysis of the statistics of velocity increments by means of structure functions or probability density functions is replaced by a new method which is based on th...

The Phenomenology of Small-scale Turbulence

Small-scale turbulence has been an area of especially active research in the recent past, and several useful research directions have been pursued. Here, we selectively review this work. The emphasis is on scaling phenomenology and kinematics of small-scale structure. After providing a brief introduction to the classical notions of universality due to Kolmogorov and others, we survey the existi...

Small-scale statistics of viscoelastic turbulence

– The small-scale statistics of homogeneous isotropic turbulence of dilute polymer solutions is investigated by means of direct numerical simulations of a simplified viscoelastic fluid model. It is found that polymers only partially suppress the turbulent cascade below the Lumley scale, leaving a remnant energy flux even for large elasticity. As a consequence, fluid acceleration in viscoelastic...

Small-scale universality in fluid turbulence.

Turbulent flows in nature and technology possess a range of scales. The largest scales carry the memory of the physical system in which a flow is embedded. One challenge is to unravel the universal statistical properties that all turbulent flows share despite their different large-scale driving mechanisms or their particular flow geometries. In the present work, we study three turbulent flows o...

Small-scale intermittency in anisotropic turbulence.

Isotropic, rotating, and stratified turbulent flows are analyzed using a scale- and direction-dependent flatness. The anisotropy of the spatial fluctuations of the energy distribution can hereby be quantified for different length scales. This measure allows one to distinguish between longitudinal and transversal intermittency as well as between horizontal and vertical intermittency. The differe...
